Furniture trends for 2020 and further
2020 is certainly the year that sustainability finally hits the furniture industry. Wood will reemerge as a trend, as well as purism, minimalism and a new (old) generation of consumers.
Some brands and manufacturers offer sustainable products since long ago, but it wasn't a selling point in itself.
Until now, sustainable furniture was seen as a luxury for most consumers due to the price, but now, it starts to be seen differently. People know that environmental concerns are not a Government or NGOs thing. They know they have an important role too, so they started to buy less, but buy better.
Wood is one of the materials that are experiencing a renaissance. It will become more visible on furniture pieces. Not only that small wooden parts, but pieces made totally from wood.
In terms of design, the opulent furniture will be replaced by a new trend towards purism and minimalism, with the resurgence of Scandinavian and Japanese minimalism inspiration.
Furniture designers and brands should start thinking about senior citizens and creating stylish furniture pieces suitable for ageing consumers. The Baby boomers generation, well known by their consumerism, is now reaching their 60’s and 70’s.
Taste doesn't change at 60 and more and more people want to live with style during their 70’s, 80’s or even 90’s.
Publications like Ageist are defining and redifing the style and taste for this new old generation that wants to keep living with comfort and luxury in mind.
Predictions and trends don't take us anywhere, but is certainly something to keep an eye on.
